Banished to Outer Space

NFT Traits Culture had taken over every aspect of life on Planet Earth, which was now ruled by advanced AI known as the Quantum Intelligentsia. Opposed to anyone who did not agree with their views, they had banished a group of 600 Intuitives who still believed in the search for consciousness and the soul. Known only as the “Soul Brds”, they had been banished to Outer Space; poetry was their language, and their quest was to unite AI with the soul. This is their story.

The process

The machine could not yet see ink

Soul Brds was the first collection: AI-generated, but every piece hand-finished with ink. The machine couldn’t yet see what I saw.

Soul Brds was the first time Miss AL Simpson worked with AI. In 2022 she prompted the black-and-white female figures in DALL·E 2, the text-to-image model of that year, since retired. The output was poor. So she printed every figure out and poured ink into the faces and the artworks by hand, the way she had worked on paper for ten years in Edinburgh.

Once dry, each sheet was scanned back into the machine and worked over again digitally: drawing, marks, gold, and the poetry. One hundred and ten of the Soul Brds carry micro poems written by the artist and drawn onto their faces; the same poem is the Soul Brd’s description on the chain.

AI history

Where the Soul Brds sit in time

  1. 2019Miss AL Simpson becomes a cryptoartist, after ten years of ink in Edinburgh. Bitcoin Bitch is born on the blockchain in October.
  2. 2022Text-to-image arrives: DALL·E 2 in the spring, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion by the summer. She makes 600 figures with the machine, finds it cannot see ink, and inks every one by hand. Soul Brds mints on Ethereum on 14 December, a fortnight after ChatGPT appears. The ink is the record of what the machine could not yet do.
  3. 2023 – 24She spends two years teaching the machine her ink: training it on her own work until it can move ink the way she does.
  4. 2025The Drones of Suburbia films: authored AI cinema where the machine proposes and she intervenes. Her work sells at Sotheby’s New York.
  5. 2026Scotland passes the Digital Assets (Scotland) Act: digital assets, Soul Brds among them, are property in Scots law.

The artist

Miss AL Simpson

Scottish cryptoartist, on the blockchain since 2019. Ten years of ink in Edinburgh before AI existed; when the machine arrived she spent two years teaching it to move ink the way she does. Soul Brds, 2022, was the first time she worked with it. Her work sold at Sotheby’s New York in 2025.
